According to my good friend Mr. Noah Webster and the dictionary that bears his name, synergy is the interaction of elements that when combined produce a total effect that is greater than the sum of the individual elements or contributions.
I assert that synergy is the phonetic marriage of sin and energy. Hence:
“sin” + “energy” = “synergy”
Sin on the most basic of levels means doing something wrong, immoral, or unethical. (Random Sidenote: the spanish word “sin” means without) Energy, on the other hand, means “an adequate or abundant amount of power.” And just for good measure, power is the ability to do or act. Considering that conspire, by definition, means “to act or work together toward the same result or goal,” let’s be conspiracy theorists for the moment in assuming that for all intensive purposes sin, or immorality, combined with energy, or an abundant ability to act, results in synergy, in which the total eclipses the sum of the parts.
Let’s take a journey through various perceptions of a seemingly simple statement. Firstly, when assessing the nature of positiveness versus negativity, we find that positive means the presence of something, whereas negative suggests it’s absence. Mathematically when two negative operations are indicated, they change the value of the argument to positive. Therefore,
Sin + Energy = (-)(-) Synergy
When adding energy to sin, we find that the resulting effects are indeed much worse than anticipated, or twice as negative, if you will. Upon applying this concept once again, we find that:
(-)(-)Sin + Energy = (+)Synergy
This can also be read as “energy combined with the absence or removal of the negative influence or aspects of sin results in a positive outcome.
The nature of sin has been debated for quite some time now. In the biblical sense, the first sin was disobedience. Without the act of disobedience, all that would have been left in the minds of Adam and Eve was curiosity and peace.
Some may question as to why we don’t simply add more energy. All physicists know that little comes of potential energy until it is set in motion!
And just for kicks and giggles, let’s take this one step further. Let’s say that the powers at be decide to be divisive! Division, in this application can be interpreted to mean separation. If we think about it on a rudimentary level, division means determining the number of groups of a certain quantity that can be produced from a total. Let us recall that operating in the same manner on both sides of an equation yields equivalent values:
[ (-)(-)Sin + Energy]/(-1) = (+)Synergy/(-1)
We just divided by negative 1 on both sides.
Upon some basic simplification:
(-Sin) – Energy = (-Synergy)
This simply means that negative division or separation causes the removal of the ability to act, even in the absence of sin. Therefore, by assessing the fruits of our labor, one could conclude that we have been separated. Thus we end up with the absence of synergy, or results that transcend the capabilities of the individuals. One could claim that the sum is good enough! But, where do you go once you reach the end of your resources and have still not reached your goal? In effect, we have reached a limit or glass ceiling. A pessimist would argue that glass is invisible whereas an optimist would say it’s a window. Is the glass half-empty, half-full, or twice as big as it need to be? It depends on the original quantity of the contents of the glass. But, I digress.
Some of us are visual learners, and graphs, or visual representations of the results of a mathematical function, are much more conducive to our comprehension. But it is in the dance of the components of an equation that the line or curve takes its shape. Values must be computed before they can be graphed and observed visually. Thus we find that by the time the patterns emerge, the only way to “break the curve”, if you will, is to change the equation. Once we become familiar with said patterns, they are much easier and quicker to reproduce. Only a negative has the ability to reverse the direction of regression analysis. Perhaps this is why people negatively influence negative situations and call it positive. However, one may notice that the positive is in fact intimately linked to a double negative. Thus anything positive has the potential to be a double negative! There’s no hope! Or so it would seem.
Based on recent discussions among my peers, we have debated and some have asserted that the world would have us believe that altruism doesn’t exist and that we are truly selfish beings. Self-centeredness to some is a sin. But, what about survival? Is survival a sin? What about the desire to survive? What about thriving? What about the desire to thrive? If one experiences dehydration and denies one’s basic needs in the spirit of altruism, the consequences will undoubtedly take their toll. When you fuel this condition with energy and resources, the results are amplified, especially when multiple individuals are involved. The result can be positive or negative, as noted in the computations above.
In the world we live in, adding more negative to negative is positive to those who only have to sit back and watch the patterns of nature take their course. But to those who are aware of the composition of the equation, two negatives can also be seen as two wrongs. And we all know that two wrongs don’t make a right.
It also is interesting to note that to the ear, write (w-r-i-t-e) sounds like right (r-i-g-h-t). Through the innocent eye’s of a child, the opposite of write is erase. Perhaps to right wrongs we must erase them? Which is why history is written by the victors, or erased by the victors. It’s like violently tearing a developing fetus from it’s mother’s womb only to cut it’s umbilical cord and use it as a noose to keep the young child from ever reaching it’s potential! Destroyed before ever put in motion! Destroyed by the very thing it depended on to survive. We are quick to blame the mother who produced the umbilical cord, but ignore the hands that did the deed.
Back to the point! If wrong is the opposite of right and left is the opposite of right as well, we can postulate that wrong is left, and we can postulate that making two lefts turns you around. And therefore we can postulate that committing two wrongs actually leaves one positioned facing in the opposite direction from which they were initially traveling.
To maintain the motif, the opposite of progress is regress, which means to return to a former or less developed state. If we remain blind to the path that we have accepted and subsequently charted for ourselves, we will continue making “progress” heading back down the road from which we’ve come. Yes, in the words of the classic church hymn, “We’ve come this far by faith.” Hebrews 11:1 states that “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen.” It does not directly mention that you can only have faith in the Lord! You can also have faith or confidence in the inevitable evidence of ignorance. If we are not prudent, we will travel double the distance and cover no ground. Others may try to only attack one portion of the issue. But we all know what happens when you only have one oar in the water; you go in circles! What happens if one oar is unequal in proportion to the other? You still go in circles! It just takes you longer to realize it!
Simply removing one negative still leaves the result negative. The very essence of an equation suggests that one side of the equal sign is in fact equivalent to the other. Thus, by removing the negative influences AND the negative circumstances, true interdependence and synergy can emerge in the form of better personal efficacy, interpersonal relationships, cultural cohesiveness, and international harmony. Revisiting a previous point, we discovered that there is a very realistic possibility that the sum of the parts may not be sufficient in order to complete a group’s mission. I submit that true synergy is exponential in nature and is therefore limitless and undefined. Why is synergy expoential? Well a line can be seen as a combination of multiplication and addition, which is in essence faster addition. Whereas, exponents are combinations of multiplication! For most, undefined means not understood. Whereas those who have studied mathematical and human nature know that we understand what it means to be limitless!
In conclusion, many of us have heard that “Hell is full of good meanings, but heaven is full of good works”. In other words, the road to hell is paved with good intentions. If we continue to let our words do more work than our hands and feet and introduce more and more energy or “ability to act” without activating that potential, we will continue accelerating in the wrong direction only to find ourselves in a similar plight as that of Benjamin Button who’s entire life was spent devolving back to infancy and eventual non-existence, better known as extinction. For those who are capable and willing, you do the math.
